Building on land without public water, replacing an old well that's failing, or dealing with a pump that quit? Tell us about your property and we'll connect you with an independent licensed well contractor who works Tyler, Smith County and East Texas. The referral is free.
Private wells around Tyler
Tyler and Smith County sit over the Carrizo-Wilcox Aquifer, one of Texas's major aquifers. The Texas Water Development Board describes it as sand interbedded with gravel, silt, clay and lignite, with freshwater sands averaging about 670 feet of saturated thickness, and notes isolated areas of slightly to moderately saline water. TWDB has studied Carrizo-Wilcox drawdown in Rusk, Smith and Gregg counties. In practice, well depth and water quality depend on exactly where you are and which sand the driller screens.
What a new well involves
A well contractor drills a borehole down to a water-bearing formation, installs casing to keep the hole open and seal out surface water, grouts the space around the casing, develops the well so it produces clean water, then sets a submersible pump, pitless adapter, pressure tank and controls. The well gets a sanitary cap above grade and a disinfection before use. A water test confirms the water is safe to drink.
Licensing
In Texas, water well drillers and pump installers are licensed by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR). Drillers must file a state well report, and the Texas Water Development Board publishes those reports in its Submitted Drillers Reports database, a useful way to see how deep nearby wells were drilled.
What it costs
WellDrillingCosts' 2026 Texas page puts the average residential well at about 225 feet and $8,550, with drilling rates of $25 to $58 per foot, and describes East Texas, including the Tyler area, as the cheapest region in the state. Angi's 2026 data puts well pump replacement at about $973 to $2,822, averaging around $1,900. See the cost guide.
